Product Description

This stunning volume was the gift book of the year when it first published, and the images that grace its pages remain iconic. From the famous Afghan girl whose haunting green eyes stare out from the book''s cover, and her poignant story that captured the world''s interest, to award-winning photography culled from the Society''s vast archives, The Photographs offers readers an inside look at National Geographic and a sharp-eyed view of the world. The book showcases the skill and imagination of such notable Geographic photographers as David Doubilet, William Albert Allard, Sam Abell, Jim Stanfield, Jodi Cobb, Jim Brandenburg, David Alan Harvey, and many more. They share their techniques, as well as personal and colorful anecdotes about individual images and their adventures in the field-sometimes humorous, sometimes terrifying, always vividly compelling. Author Leah Bendavid-Val writes about the photographers'' achievements from technical, journalistic, and artistic perspectives. Five chapters cover core National Geographic themes-wildlife on land and water; cultures in the United States and around the world; and science, from astronomy to archaeology to the human senses. The photographs in each chapter capture rare moments in nature and the lives of animals, along with defining events in the lives of people everywhere. This exquisite collection is as elegant as it is timeless.

National Geographic''s photography is justifiably known for its high quality. This book has some incredible photographs, and background on how and why some of these pictures came to be.

Some of the photos are beautiful. Some are emotionally evocative. Some are awe-inspiring. But all of them are too damn small. The pages of the book measure smaller than 6 1/2 by 7 inches and that is just too small to do justice to these photographs.

If this book looks appealing to you, get the larger paperback edition rather than this dinky hardcover version. You won''t regret it.

I talked to the people at Nat. Geo and they were out of that issue and if I could get it the price of $10.95 when it came back in.

I love National Geographic and its photos. This book is filled with great photos and descriptions but the book is really small.... I was thinking it would be more like a coffee table book which it would be if your coffee table is tiny. The print is small and I actually bought as a gift for my dad, but I''m not sure he''ll be able to read much of it - even with his glasses.

So while I do like the photos, I should have paid more attention to the dimensions. I just really had never seen a photo book, especially a hard cover Nat Geo one, so small. And yes, it does say it''s 8"x6" in the details but it just seems smaller, maybe because you want to see bigger images.

The iconic cover photo of this beautiful Afghan girl is what made Steve MCurry, the photographer, famous. Years ago I bought this book but in several moves it disappeared. i owned it in the larger normal-sized art book and have looked to replace that for a long time. This is a lovely LITTLE book but just does not give its photos full justice. It''s a stunning introduction to Steve MCurry though.

National Geographic-The Photographs : Elegant! Date : 25th December 2016 (Bought this back in 2013) A Treasure & an Inspiration for a true Photo Enthusiast. The Author Leah Bendavid-Val, Director of Photography Publishing for Nat Geo Books, talks about the photographers, their photographs and their achievements. As its preface say, The Photographs offers readers an inside look at the Nat Geo''s award winning photographs, the facts behind them, and the inside stories of the men and women who took them. It was the Gift Book of the Year, in the year it was published. If you have a photo enthusiast friend or relative, its the best gift they can get from you. BTW I gifted it to myself :D The whole book is categorized into sections like Then and Now, Faraway Places, In the Wild, Underwater, The Sciences and In the USA. The book is made of quality(can''t say the best) pages to showcase the various marvelous photographs of renowned Nat Geo photographers & photo-journalists like Steve McCurry, Raghubir Singh, David Doubilet, Bill Curtsinger and assignments of David Alan Harvey, Jim Stanfield, Emory Kristof (The Titanic) and many more. As you see, the front cover features one of the most famous photographs around the world, ''The Afghan Girl'', a portrait of an Afghan refugee girl (Sharbat Gula), taken in 1985 by Steve McCurry. And the back cover, the same Sharbat Gula in 2002 after Steve''s successful attempt to find her after a decade. I have only seen ''The Afghan Girl'' in digital image format, never in a printed hard-copy till i get this book on my hand. If you really want to feel that photo, ''her'' eyes, the depth of ''her'' look into the camera, try to see the photo as/in a hard-copy on your hands. Some of my favourite photographs from the book are - Whale Shark by David Doubilet - Photo of Riders at Maui by Grosvenor - Pilloried Cinese Murderers by Joseph E Rock - First Snow Loopord photo inn wild by George Schaller - First successful underwater color photograph by Longley & Charles Martin. The book consists of 336 pages and is square shaped with dimensions 17 x 18 x 3.3 cm. If you find my review helpful, please click YES below, that would encourage me to write more reviews :) Happy Shopping !

An aficionado of photography or someone with an interest in National Geographic Magazine would probably question the decision to publish a book with many iconic photos in such a small format. If price was a constraint, a soft-back could have been used and that would permit a proportionately larger format whilst maintaining the cover price. I have since discovered that there are one or two others in a ''series'' that share a common format. The cover picture, alone, is probably one of the most memorable photographs of the 20th century and has been reprinted many times in books and magazines worldwide. Most of the remaining photographs are less well-known outside of the original magazines. A pocket-sized book, for that is what it essentially is, is simply too small to do full justice to the many highly-skilled photographers who travelled to some of the world''s remotest, and in some instances dangerous, locations to take the many pictures within. National Geographic Magazine was a magazine I would occasionally read at school. I could not then afford to buy it as an 11- or 12-year old but one of my teachers did buy it and the copies were later very obligingly donated to the school library. At the time, I had no interest in photography - that was to follow some years later when I could afford to buy a 20-year-old second-hand folding camera that lasted until I could afford something more modern - but I did have an interest in geography and the world and I would probably be able only to read a single article in the time available during a lunch break. Some years later, I would buy a copy if it contained an article of interest, but not regularly. I also did have a 1-year subscription that was not renewed as finding the time to read them was a problem. As many world famous photographers have worked for the magazine on assignment, the quality of its photography is very high and much of its content is literally a once in a lifetime opportunity. The photographs are mostly wonderful, there is little dispute in that, but the book fails to provide the scale of size that they truly deserve. The book is moderately priced but I would have happily paid more to see the photos properly displayed in a suitable size, possibly closer to 8 x 10 inches. Less memorable content is sometimes offered in a coffee-table-sized version; why not this?
